Randolph EMC Responding to Scattered Outages, Additional Crews on Standby

Randolph EMC Responding to Scattered Outages, Additional Crews on Standby

September 14, 2018 (Asheboro, N.C.)—Randolph Electric Membership Corporation continues to monitor weather conditions and remains prepared to respond to widespread power outages resulting from Hurricane Florence. Additional crews are in place to provide assistance throughout this storm event.

Outages have been scattered Friday morning, mainly in southern Randolph County, Moore and Montgomery Counties. As of 11 a.m., approximately 400 members are without power. As rain totals and wind speeds increase, we expect additional outages to occur. Heavily saturated ground can cause trees’ root systems to weaken, and wind gusts up to 35 mph can topple even large healthy trees onto power lines.

Care should always be taken to stay well away from downed or low-hanging power lines. Even though power lines may be down, they can still carry an electric current strong enough to cause a serious injury or death. We also urge members to ensure that generators are properly connected. They should be used in well-ventilated areas and should never be connected to your home’s electrical panel or fuse boxes so that electricity does not feed back into the power lines, endangering line technicians and damaging electric service facilities.

Members who experience a power outage should report it by calling 1-877-736-2633 (1-877-REMC-OFF). Members who have enrolled in REMC’s SPOTT Alerts Outage Texting program may also text OUT to this number report an outage at their location. These members should note that outage status updates will be unavailable during storm outage restoration efforts.
