Brief winter weather update 1-24-2011

Subject: Brief winter weather update
Late tonight, in the predawn hours, there remains a small chance of freezing rain in central North Carolina east of a line from about Fayetteville to Scotland Neck. Guidance has trended drier compared to Sunday's information. If anything occurs, precipitation should be very light, and temperatures will be at or just below freezing. Temperatures should be well above freezing by 9 AM.
Regarding the stronger storm system for late Tuesday through Wednesday, the latest trend continues, with rain or mostly rain at the onset, followed by colder air and a possible transition to wintery precipitation as the storm moves to the northeast Wednesday night. We still need to be watchful for the best chances of a transition to snow over the northwest Piedmont late Wednesday, as the system moves away and just before precipitation ends. Although the wind will help dry conditions Wednesday night, leftover moisture in sheltered areas could freeze early Thursday morning, mostly west of the Triangle.
Expect another, brief update tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.
